What Cold Mix Open Graded Bituminous Pavement?

Open Graded Cold Mix Bituminous Pavement is a mixture of course mineral aggregate mixed at air temperature with a heated polymer modified emulsified asphalt. This is laid on a prepared road base to the required depth and width.

Aggregate from stock pile dumped directly into the front of the machine. Aggregate is fed at a controlled rate by a belt conveyor to pug mill mixer where it is mixed with chosen bitumen, pumped at a metered rate. Mix is discharged at the rear of the mixer and spread by augers in front of vibratory screed which lays mixed material to desired thickness.

Cold Mix Advantages

  • Cold mix is the choice for up-grading rural and suburban roadways when the best surface is desired at the least cost to the buyer

  • Cold mix paving material weathers distortion due to frost or sub-grade weakness better than more rigid type pavements

  • Cold mix pavements tend to be "Self-Healing" under solar heat and rubber tire traffic

  • Cold mix pavement has a smooth quiet ride as well as a high coefficient of friction for added safety

  • Cold mix will surface more roadway for a given amount of money

  • Cold mix, once laid down and rolled, can be opened to traffic immediately and reaches durable strength in 24 hours

  • On-location mixing saves trucking and rehandling -- dump directly into Mix-Paver

  • Mixing and laying in one continuous operation provides consistent control of aggregate and bitumen proportioning, faster setting times, and superior grade control

  • Combined mixing and laying operation produce more tons per man per day. Fewer men are required
